Urgent & Afterhours Care

General Practice Urgent Care and Afterhours Services

If you have a medical emergency, please call 111 without delay.

Many General Practices have an afterhours phone service via their main General Practice number between 5pm to 8am. This will direct enrolled patients to the Urgent Care Centre of their choice. 
If you are unsure whether you need urgent care, call Healthline on 0800 611 116 24-hours a day and a health professional will tell you the best next steps. 
Urgent care and walk-in clinics deliver services for diagnoses and treatment for urgent clinical health needs such as illnesses or injuries that need immediate attention but are not life-threatening. You can go to an Urgent Care facility without an appointment if you:  
  • need treatment quickly (if you are suddenly very ill, have a bad cut, burn, sprain or fracture) 
  • your General Practice is closed
  • if you are not enrolled with a doctor
  • or you are visiting from out of town

General Practice Afterhours Services: Afterhours services are provided by General Practices which have extended working hours. 

Note: Urgent care services do not process urgent requests for medical certificates and other documentation such as: 
  • WINZ forms (specific)
  • ACC documentation
  • Return to work documents
  • Medical certificates
  • Routine scripts

City Doctors and Horowhenua After Hours would like people to call first before heading to the clinic. The Palms asks that patients present to the practice and they will be triaged on arrival. Urgent care and afterhours fees can be found on the individual Urgent Care facilities’ websites.

  • Palmerston North

    City Doctors and The Palms are open during the day and after-hours (8am-8pm) to see enrolled and casual patients (this includes visitors to the region and people who are currently not enrolled in a General Practice.

    Urgent care afterhours only 

  • Tararua Health Group

    Enrolled patients can ring Tararua Health Group and their call will be transferred to the afterhours service. This service is not available for casual patients or people who are not enrolled with Tararua Health Group.

  • Feilding Health Care

    Feilding Health Care hold weekly evening acute walk in clinics between 6:00pm - 8:00pm, this service is for their enrolled patients. This service is not available for casual patients or people who are not enrolled with Feilding Health Care.

  • Horowhenua/Foxton

    Horowhenua/Foxton After Hours is an after-hours service only.

  • Ōtaki Medical Centre

    For Ōtaki, enrolled patients at Ōtaki Medical Centre can ring the practice and their call will be triaged by a Registered Nurse. This service is not available for casual patients or people who are not enrolled with Ōtaki Medical Centre.

Urgent Radiology

If you need urgent radiology services, please contact your General Practice Team to find out how they can help get you to the service you need. If you are unsure whether you need urgent care, you can call Healthline 0800 611 116 24-hours a day and a health professional can tell you the best next steps.
