Diabetes Specialist Podiatry Service

Diabetes Specialist Podiatry Service

People with diabetes have a high risk of foot ulcers and other complications.

The Diabetes Podiatry Service checks how well you can feel your feet, check for any areas that may be in danger of ulceration and test the blood supply to your legs and feet. These checks are painless and non-invasive.

What does the service offer?

Education

Diabetes podiatrists can provide information about the 'diabetic foot' so you know how to care for your feet, and know what to do if something doesn't feel right.

Prevention of complications

It is very important to take care of your feet as they can seriously affected by diabetes. A small ulcer wound left unchecked could lead to the need for amputation. This service will talk you through caring for your feet including these important points:
  • Checking your feet regularly for signs of damage
  • Washing and drying your feet thoroughly
  • Keeping the skin between your toes clean and dry
  • Applying moisturiser to help stop your toes and feet from drying out (but not between your toes)
  • Having well-fitted shoes (not too loose or too tight) which ideally should cover your feet to avoid dryness

Details of the service

A diabetes podiatry appointment can take up to one hour.

During an initial assessment, the podiatrist will talk with you about how often you should visit the service.
