Pulmonary (Respiratory) Rehabilitation is a service provided by THINK Hauora, through funding from the DHB, and is a treatment response to the long term respiratory conditions more commonly known as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and/or Chronic Asthma.
COPD is a term for damage to the lungs which makes breathing difficult, left untreated the condition can reduce the quality of life. The main cause of COPD is long-term exposure to substances that irritate and damage the lungs; nearly all COPD in New Zealand is smoking-related. There is no cure for COPD, so prevention is best. If you need help to stop smoking, THINK Hauora provides support and assistance to do this well.
THINK Hauora, with the dedication of its passionate clinicians have developed a 10-week Pulmonary Rehabilitation programme, which runs throughout the year. The programme aims to provide several positive benefits for the people attending:
- Promotes an understanding of the problems associated with the condition.
- Encouraging and teaching self-management, including understanding of medication to help control the symptoms.
- Helps minimise the effects of the disease by improving physical fitness, and altering attitudes toward life by improving confidence and promoting well-being.
Individuals have reported a gradual build-up of physical fitness and an understanding of the techniques that are effective, resulting in better self-management and confidence.
