People with diabetes are at risk of developing eye damage called diabetic retinopathy. With early diagnosis and treatment, damage can be reduced or avoided.
Where a person has been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, the General Practice Team will refer them to an Optometrist in their area for an eye examination, to closely monitor any changes. This check should be completed every 2 to 3 years following the initial examination.
Through funding from the DHB, THINK Hauora have secured contracts with several Optometrists both within and around the PHO region, ensuring access for all patients.
